Independent Member for Alfred Cove Dr Janet Woollard congratulates Ardross Primary School for being named Science School of the Year in the 2009 WA Education Awards announced on 7 December.
"The award recognises Ardross Primary School‟s success in improving student achievement in science," said Dr Woollard.
"Most importantly, it demonstrates the school‟s excellence in teaching and developing creative ways for students to learn, enjoy themselves and contribute towards saving the environment.
"Ardross Primary School received $15,000 for winning the award and this will be used for purchasing science equipment.
"Ardross Primary‟s science curriculum and activities are impressive," said Dr Woollard.
"For instance, in 2008, students raised more than 2,000 drought resistant species and planted 400 of the shrubs, ground covers and trees locally, while sending the remaining to Wheatbelt farms for planting as wind breaks and to rehabilitate salt affected creek lines, returning oxygen to the atmosphere.
"In another project, the school established the "Re Room" which stores recyclable materials until they can be reused or sent for recycling.
"Ardross Primary School was also the recipient of 2009 Keep Australia Beautiful (WA) Sustainability Awards under the "Waste Management and Litter Prevention‟ category.
"I once again extend my congratulations to Ardross Primary School for their win, which is true testimony of the dedication and commitment of staff, parents and the school community towards excellence in education."
Dr Woollard also congratulates Applecross Primary School for being one of the four finalists in the award category, and Ms Auriol Heary of Ardross Primary School for being one of the four finalists for the Premier‟s Teacher of the Year. Each finalist received $2,500 in prize money.
