Booragoon Primary School students and teachers did their part to help the environment by taking part in the country’s biggest tree planting event today, Alfred Cove MLA Dr Janet Woollard said today.
“On July 29 and 31, Planet Ark’s National Tree Day and Schools Tree Day combine to make Australia's biggest community tree-planting event,” Dr Woollard said.
“For school children in particular this is a fantastic way to beautify school grounds while having fun with friends and teachers and learning about planting and caring for native trees and plants.”
Dr Woollard visited Booragoon Primary School today to help the students plant trees around the school grounds.
“Schools Tree Day is an event for children and young people to learn about trees and the role they play in our environment in a fun and practical way,” she said.
“Each year approximately 200,000 students from across the country participate in Schools Tree Day and it is great to see Booragoon Primary School taking part in the event this year.
“It is such a rewarding experience for children to plant native tree seeds and then wait for the first leaves to emerge through the soil.”
Since National Tree Day began in 1996, more than 2.5million volunteers have planted 16million native trees, shrubs and grasses.
“It’s easy, fun and a small investment of time for great environmental and community benefits,” Dr Woollard said.
