Independent Member for Alfred Cove Dr Janet Woollard is inviting members of the Alfred Cove community to participate in the Monument Challenge on World Diabetes Day, which falls on 14 November.

Dr Woollard said the innovative Challenge involves lighting iconic sites, monuments and buildings throughout the world in blue.

"The Challenge is part of a global campaign to heighten awareness of diabetes and the need for strategies that focus on prevention and management," said Dr Woollard.

"The more people understand about diabetes, the better chance they have of preventing its onset or managing the condition."

"This is the second year the Challenge is being organised and Western Australians have the opportunity to be part of this significant activity by lighting up their home or place of work.

"They could use Christmas lights, light up a blue candle or even adorn their homes and offices with blue balloons and decorations.

They could also participate by wearing blue. Dr Woollard added that the colour blue was chosen because it is the colour of the World Diabetes Day circle logo.

The blue circle logo signifies the unity of the global diabetes response to the diabetes pandemic.

"The illuminated buildings will act as beacons of hope for the 246 million people worldwide, including the 90,000 Western Australians, who have diabetes.

"Research has shown that the financial cost of diabetes to WA is approximately $1.2 billion per year. Efforts should be made to reduce this preventable condition," said Dr Woollard.

"I encourage members of the community to participate in the Challenge. Photos can be sent to my electorate office, which we will forward the photos to Diabetes WA which is leading the Challenge in WA.

"I look forward to seeing buildings, homes, cafes, shops, places of work, as well as people in blue on 14 November," said Dr Woollard.
