Canning Highway Road Reduction

The Government has introduced a Bill that will decrease the road reserve along Canning Highway between Glenelg Street, Applecross and Petra Street, Palmyra.

The plans will reduce the width of the Primary Regional Road reservation from between 70 and 80 metres, to between 30 and 40 metres.

“The reduction has been proposed because the Department for Planning no longer feels it is necessary to keep such a wide reserve,” said Independent Member for Alfred Cove, Dr Janet Woollard MLA.

“I am pleased that part of Wireless Hill Park, which could have been lost to road reserve, will now be saved as bushland.”

The Government plans for this stretch of Canning Highway allow for an additional bus and bicycle lane.

Whilst supporting better public transport facilities, Dr Woollard is working with the Department for Planning to ensure there are adequate safe crossing points for pedestrians.

The community have expressed concerns that any changes which increase the amount of traffic, may cause a division between suburbs and residents living on either side of Canning Highway.

A copy of the proposed changes to Canning Highway are available for the community to review at Dr Woollard’s office.
