Check Your Deck

Release date:

Independent Member for Alfred Cove Dr Janet Woollard is reminding members of the community to check the safety of their balconies and decks.

“Decks or balconies have the potential to fail if they are not well designed, constructed or maintained,” said Dr Woollard.

“There have been cases of balconies collapsing and causing injuries to people.

“Insects such as termites, wet rot of timber, corrosive effects and additional loads like large pots of furniture could affect the structure of the decks and balconies.

“It is important that everyone regularly checks them to make sure they are safe.”

Dr Woollard said that with people making the most of the warmer weather now is the perfect time to undertake inspection and maintenance.

“If you are concerned about the safety of your balcony or deck, avoid the area and contact a qualified building practitioner.”

Dr Woollard said that further information about inspecting and maintaining decks and balconies can be found in the Building Commission’s publication Balconies and decks – a guide to maintenance.
