Independent Member for Alfred Cove, Dr Janet Woollard is calling on the State Government to undertake further studies on the impact of Fremantle Port’s proposal to deepen the shipping channel at Fremantle.
The proposal involves deepening the Deep Water Channel, Entrance Channel and Inner Harbour and reclamation of an area of seabed at Rous Head, where approximately 3.1 million cubic metres of material will be dredged in total.
"The advice given to me by an independent expert indicates that despite the Environmental Protection Authority’s approval, the larger issues surrounding the proposal have not been appropriately examined," said Dr Woollard.
"For instance, plans to deepen the shipping channel at the mouth of the Swan River and how these will influence the water level in Perth waters and the salinity in the whole river were not addressed in the EPA’s report.
"Other matters which were not adequately addressed included the long-term viability of the water ecosystem following the deepening with particular reference to residual circulation; the impact on Cottesloe Marine Reserve; the spread of sediments to other areas; and the effects of increased shipping traffic."
Dr Woollard said she sought advice from an expert in the field of water quality in estuaries and coastal sees after being approached by constituents who were concerned that the proposal might impact negatively on neighbouring beaches.
"The constituents’ concerns may be warranted and the Government should make an effort to determine the full impact of Fremantle Port’s proposal," said Dr Woollard.
Dr Woollard said while she appreciated that the harbour required deepening to accommodate the larger vessels utilising the port, a long-term ecological review is required.
"Recent media reports have noted our troubled water and river systems and this should not be further exacerbated.
"I have written to the Premier and the Minister for Environment regarding this issue and I am looking forward to their response."
