Do Not Call Register Reminder

Release date:
15 Sep 2010

Independent Member for Alfred Cove Dr Janet Woollard is reminding members of the community to list or re-register their home, mobile or internet based phone numbers on the Do Not Call Register if they want to avoid unsolicited telemarketing calls.

“The Do Not Call Register is a secure database that was established in May 2007 in response to community concerns about the growing number of unsolicited telemarketing calls,” said Dr Woollard “

Telemarketers are not allowed to call numbers listed on the Do Not Call Register.”

Dr Woollard said once a number has been registered, it remains on the Do not Call Register for three years.

“People who listed their numbers on the register when it was first established may find their number has been automatically removed,” said Dr Woollard.

It is important that people re-register their numbers within the three-year period.”

Dr Woollard said to register or re-register a number, or to make a complaint if telemarketing calls are still being received 30 days after a number has been registered:

1. Visit www.donotcall.gov.au;

2. Call 1300 792 958; or

3. Visit Dr Woollard’s Electorate Office to pick up a postal application form.

“While listing your number will prevent unsolicited telemarketing calls, public interest organisations such as charities, businesses you have an existing relationship with, and researchers conducting opinion polling and standard questionnaire-based research calls will still be permitted to call your number.”

Dr Woollard said only numbers used primarily for domestic or private purposes could be listed on the Do Not Call Register. Business numbers and fax numbers however were not eligible to be listed.
