Independent Member for Alfred Cove Dr Janet Woollard is calling for members of the community to be cautious in their internet use.
"People of all ages use the internet, from children to seniors, and all internet users need to be equally vigilant about online safety", said Dr Woollard.
"Everyone should be careful not to give out personal information online, and passwords should always be changed regularly.
"Seniors should be wary of emails asking for credit card, account or other personal details.
"It is important to explain to children and teenagers why it is unsafe to post personal information on social networking sites such as Facebook."
Dr Woollard said parents may find it easier to monitor their children’s internet use if they are familiar with the technology themselves.
"Young people should be reminded not to post anything online that they would not want their parents, teachers or future employers to see," said Dr Woollard.
"Remember that once you post something online it stays there for a very long time."
Dr Woollard said it was important to educate children about safe and considerate online behaviour.
"A good principal to implement is not to behave differently online than how you would behave in your everyday life," said Dr Woollard. "Remind children never to talk to strangers online, just as they would not talk to strangers in person."
"Children and teenagers should keep in mind that they should not say things online that they would not say in day-to-day life."
"Online bullying can be a serious problem, as there have recently been incidents with students targeting teachers online, as well as targeting other students," said Dr Woollard.
