Learning for Life Fundraiser Gains MPs' Support

Release date:
7 Apr 2010

Independent Member for Alfred Cove Dr Janet Woollard joined Member for South Perth Mr John McGrath today in lending her support towards a Giant Garage Sale which is being organised by Learning for Life Ministries on Saturday, 17 April 2010 between 8 am and 12 noon at the South Perth Church of Christ (Cnr Murray St & McNabb Loop, Como).

Learning for Life Ministries is a not-for-profit organisation which provides support for young people in need, working primarily with young offenders at Rangeview Remand Centre and Banksia Hill Detention Centre.

“The organisation hopes members of the community will come to the Giant Garage Sale and help it to raise $5,000 for Life Skills Courses for young people at risk,” said Dr Woollard.

“Together with other support activities and educational programs, these courses are aimed at helping the young people realise a successful vocation and gain skills for a productive life beyond their detention.

“The support and services provided by Learning for Life Ministries are necessary if we want to reduce the chances of reoffending.”

Dr Woollard said in 2008/9, 1,182 young people were remanded in WA’s two juvenile detention centres.  Many of them were poorly illiterate, victims of abuse and neglect and involved with substance abuse.

Funds will be raised at the Giant Garage Sale by gold coin donation at the entrance, sale of donated items and a sausage sizzle.

“Members of the community can also join me in donating items for the garage sale, so more funds could be raised.”

Donated items can be dropped off at:

a.    Dr Woollard’s Electorate Office, 1/30 Ardross St, Applecross up to 12 pm on 16 April; and

b.  South Perth Church of Christ on 15 and 16 April between 1 and 7 pm.
