Making Seniors' Homes Safer

Release date:

Independent Member for Alfred Cove Dr Janet Woollard is calling on eligible seniors to apply for rebates to cover the purchase and installation of electrical and fire safety items.

“The Seniors Safety and Security Rebate scheme was expanded in December last year to help seniors improve the safety of their homes,” said Dr Woollard.

“Each Seniors Card household can now access an additional $200 to buy and/or install mains wired smoke alarms, residual currency devices which prevent shocks by cutting the power off,
fire extinguishers and blankets.

“This is in addition to the $200 which can be claimed for home security devices when the scheme was launched in 2009.”

Dr Woollard said the Government has indicated the additional rebate is so far under-subscribed.

“More than $8 million worth of rebates is said to be still available,” said Dr Woollard.

“The Rebate Scheme will end on 30 June 2012. Applications must be made prior to 31 March 2011.”

The forms are available online at www.seniorscard.wa.gov.au and at all Australia Post outlets.

“Seniors who do not have access to the internet, may contact my office on 9316 1377 to have the forms downloaded and sent to them,” said Dr Woollard.

“I encourage Seniors Card holders in the Alfred Cove community to apply for these rebates if they have not done so, as it may assist in meeting the costs to help enhance the security of
their homes.”
