Independent Member for Alfred Cove Dr Janet Woollard today welcomed the formation of the Melville Action Group (MAG) which was formed in response to concerns regarding development plans for Canning Bridge Precinct (Precinct).
"MAG is made up of residents who believe the current plans for the Precinct will destroy the amenity of not only Applecross and Mount Pleasant, but the Melville community in general," said Dr Woollard.
"I am pleased to see the community working together to ensure any future plans for the Canning Bridge Development will not destroy the amenity of the area and will take into account community concerns."
Dr Woollard said MAG has developed a range of signs that communicate the community’s concerns regarding high rise development and the associated traffic and parking problems.
These signs can be purchased from MAG for a $40 or $50 donation. They are also available from Dr Woollard’s electorate office.
Kim Stedman, Chairman of MAG emphasised that the group is not against development that will improve the area.
"We are solely concerned that the Precinct plans as it stands now do not reflect what the broader community view as appropriate," said Mr Stedman.
"In addition, we are very disappointed at the lack of community consultation by the City of Melville and the West Australian Planning Commission regarding the plans.
"MAG aims to get more people to express their views about how they think the development at the Precinct should take place, particularly when their amenity will be adversely affected should the current plans go ahead.
"We are planning a community meeting at 6 pm on 31 August at the Canning Bridge Senior Citizen’s Centre," said Mr Stedman.
Dr Woollard said MAG has established a website www.melvilleactiongroup.com.au and is in the process of being incorporated.
