Independent Liberal Member for Alfred Cove Dr Janet Woollard appealed to the community to help out with food or gift donations for the annual Anglicare Angels Christmas Appeal.
Dr Woollard said many families in the community needed assistance, particularly at Christmas time.
“The festive season is a very good time to help those needy families in our community by donating to the Anglicare Christmas Appeal. Anglicare provides more than 1,000 Christmas hampers to needy families and I encourage everyone to take the time this festive season to support such a worthy cause,” said Dr Woollard.
Dr Woollard said Anglicare had a long history of assisting families through trying times and all donations of foodstuff or gifts would be much appreciated.
“Food items need to be non-perishable, such as baby food, tinned goods, long life milk, pasta and rice, spreads like jam and vegemite, sauces, biscuits, cereals, toiletries or even Christmas fare,” said Dr Woollard.
“While out Christmas shopping, picking up something extra to donate to such a wonderful cause could make a great difference to a family in need. Any gift items such as toy cars, dolls, books, games or puzzles, sporting equipment or colouring in books and pencils could help to make someone else’s Christmas much brighter this year.”
“Anglicare aims to provide a range of toys and gifts for children of all ages from babies through to teenagers. In particular, gifts for boys aged over 12 are always in short supply so any donations of socks, boxer shorts, caps or even deodorants would be appreciated.”
Dr Woollard said volunteers were needed to act as drivers to collect the donated items or to help sort the hamper goods.
“If people would like to volunteer their services to assist with sorting the donated goods over the period from 8 – 18th December, they should call 9263 2111. All offers of assistance would be very well received.”
Dr Woollard said disadvantaged families that would like to request a hamper should call Anglicare on 9325 7033 to make an appointment.
“Anglicare sets up the donated foodstuffs and gifts in a supermarket-style layout so that needy families can come along at an appointed time to choose the items for a Christmas hamper that best suits their family’s needs and requirements.”
Donations for the Christmas hampers can be left at Dr Woollard’s office, 1/30 Ardross Street, Applecross between the hours of 9am and 4pm Monday to Friday.
