The Independent Liberal Member for Alfred Cove, Dr Janet Woollard MLA, is urging the Alfred Cove community to consider becoming a volunteer during National Volunteer Week, which is taking place between 11-17 May 2009.

“Volunteering is a rewarding way for people to make a difference and give something back to their community,” Dr Woollard said.

“Volunteering allows people to learn new skills and meet new people. It gives the community a chance to help causes or charities they feel strongly about.”

Melville Cares is an independent organisation within the Alfred Cove community that offers support services to seniors, people with special needs, and their carers.

Like many charities and community groups, Melville Cares often struggles to get enough volunteers to fill the services they offer.

“One area we urgently need volunteers for is driving the Melville Cares bus,” said El Bennett, Melville Cares’ Administrator. “We offer our clients safe and comfortable transport between their home and their destination.”

“We also need volunteers for our community visitors’ scheme. This aims to enrich the life of lonely or isolated residents who would benefit from a friendly visitor in local aged care homes.”

“I have seen the work that the volunteers of Melville Cares do and it is fantastic,” Dr Woollard said. “One couple, Myls and Yvonne Reid, have given more than 30 years of joint service to Melville Cares. I know Myls and Yvonne get as much out of volunteering as they put in. They find it so rewarding to be able to do something as simple as bring a smile to someone’s face.”
