Independent Member for Alfred Cove Dr Janet Woollard congratulates the State Government on their stance regarding alcohol consumption for young people.

Dr Woollard said she supports the Government’s ecommendations that alcohol consumption by young people is delayed as long as possible.

“Studies have repeatedly found that consumption of alcohol harms the developing brain of a young person,” said Dr Woollard.

“The National Health and Medical Research Council advices that young people under the age of 18 should avoid drinking alcohol due to the increased likelihood of accidents, injuries, physical and mental health conditions and later alcohol dependence.”

Dr Woollard said it was for these reasons that she intends to introduce amendments to the Liquor Control Act 1988 which would regulate the supply of alcohol to young people under the age of 18 on private premises without parental consent in Western Australia.

“There are no restrictions at present regarding the supply of alcohol on private or domestic premises in WA,” said Dr Woollard.

“This means a child under 18 could attend a party in a private home and be served alcohol without their parents’ knowledge or consent.

“Parents I have spoken to are supportive of such an amendment, which clearly indicates what is an accepted community standard regarding alcohol consumption by young people.

“It will offer parents and guardians another level of support for protecting their children from the harmful effects of alcohol.”

Dr Woollard said she is hopeful the amendments will be supported by her colleagues in Parliament, as they would offer protection to young people in the community.
