Opposition to Plans for Canning Bridge Still Exists

Independent Member for Alfred Cove Dr Janet Woollard met with members of the Melville Action Group (MAG) yesterday who said they are still opposed to the proposed heights and areas covered under the development plans for Canning Bridge Precinct.

Dr Woollard said people have moved into the area because of the amenity which is being threatened by Council.s plans.

“MAG is unhappy that the City of Melville Council have not carried out community consultation as promised,” said Dr Woollard.

“They have not heard from Council for over six months regarding Canning Bridge Precinct when they were told they would be consulted and informed of the progress of the plans.

“The group has informed me they will be asking to meet with Council to ask for updates over the last six months and their plans moving forward.

“The meeting would be an opportune time to confirm rumours that Council is rethinking the proposed heights of 20 storeys as well as confining the development back to the 'Original Study Area'.

“Growing complaints about traffic problems along Canning Highway has brought to light once again the potential nightmare that could result at Canning Bridge due to high density development.

“MAG has indicated they want the current and impending traffic problems to be addressed before any change to building heights.”

Dr Woollard said there are concerns that the issue is lying dormant until after the Council Elections in October.

“Council Elections this year will give the community a chance to vote for a Mayor and Councillors who listen to the community rather than make decisions against the community's wishes,” said Dr Woollard.

“Communities such as those in Cottesloe and Claremont are lobbying their Council to keep heights well below 8 storeys.

“City of Melville Councillors should listen to their community who want heights to remain under Community Planning Scheme No. 5 provisions where it is a maximum of 9 storeys, and is currently under-utilised by existing landowners.”
