Proposed farmers market at Booragoon Primary School

Independent Member for Alfred Cove, Dr Janet Woollard MLA is supporting Booragoon Primary School in its application to the City of Melville to start a farmers market in the Spring of 2009, to run every Sunday from 8:30am to 1:30pm.

“I think the farmers market is a great idea because not only will it showcase and support local producers, but it will help Booragoon Primary’s P & C raise funds for the school,” said Dr Woollard.

Paul Buckland, Acting Chairman of Booragoon Primary’s Farmers Market Committee, hopes that the farmers market will engage the local and wider community.

“We want to make the farmers market a ‘paddock-to-plate’ environment, where people can come and buy high quality, local, seasonal and fresh produce directly from the producers,” said Mr Buckland.

“Customers will be able to speak to the people behind the product and get information on exactly what they are buying.”

Farmers markets are one way to promote healthy eating practices, something Dr Woollard is proud that schools in her electorate, like Booragoon Primary, are doing.

“Some of the schools in my electorate have edible gardens where students have hands-on involvement with growing their own produce,” explained Dr Woollard.

“Booragoon Primary’s farmers market will be another way that parents can teach children good eating habits and encourage them to choose healthy, fresh food when it is available.”
