Independent Member for Alfred Cove Dr Janet Woollard welcomes the installation of traffic signals at the intersection of Ardross Street and Canning Highway in Applecross.

“The traffic signals will make the intersection safer for school children, pedestrians and cyclists who need to negotiate traffic while crossing the highway,” said Dr Woollard.

“This is an extremely busy intersection which sees more than 3,000 vehicles passing it between 8 and 9 am alone.

“The number of crashes at the intersection increased by 39%, rising 183 spots in the State rankings for frequency of crashes – from 883 for the five-year period ending 31 December 2006 to 700 for the five-year period ending 31 December 2008.

“Crossing such an intersection can prove hazardous for an adult, let alone a primary school child or an elderly person.

“The traffic signals will help towards minimising the number and severity of crashes in the area.”

Dr Woollard said she has been working with the St Benedict’s School community for many years lobbying the State Government to improve the safety of the intersection.  School traffic wardens for the intersection were removed in 2006.

“I am happy the Minister for Transport, Simon O’Brien MLC, and Main Roads listened and responded to community concerns,” said Dr Woollard.

“I understand work on the signals is expected to begin in August and will be completed by Christmas this year.”

Dr Woollard said the traffic signals at the intersection will be synchronised with others on Canning Highway to ensure impact on travel times for motorists is minimised.
