Independent Liberal Member for Alfred Cove Dr Janet Woollard today presented a $12,274 Lotterywest Grant to Millennium Kids, a youth environmental group, at the Murray House Community Education Building in Applecross.

Millennium Kids was one of 97 organisations who received a Lotterywest Grant in March 2009.

“It is fantastic to see young people, like the members of Millennium Kids, standing up for the environment and making their voices heard,” said Dr Woollard.

The grant will be used to purchase equipment and run workshops for developing two weekly youth radio programmes.

The programmes will be broadcast as “Millennium Kids Corner” on Hype 101.7FM, Perth’s newest youth community station.

Dr Woollard, who was elected into Parliament on a predominantly environmental platform, is very happy that groups such as Millennium Kids are in existence.

“This generation is inheriting so many problems, like climate change and the destruction of native forests”, Dr Woollard said.

“It is important for young people to get engaged with projects like the ones Millennium Kids develop. Their involvement in protecting and caring for the environment will pave the way for future generations.”

“The Lotterywest Grant will allow Millennium Kids to take the workshops to the kids, where we can record and produce them in the classroom, on the street and on location. It’s very exciting”, said Ms Laurendi.

“With Millennium Kids broadcasting the message to young people that they need to get active and vocal about environmental issues, the future seems very bright,” Dr Woollard said.
